At home in her ‘Habitat’

Joelle Thompson

Painting with oil just was not capturing what Joelle Thompson was trying to express in her art.

She makes a point to use a non-toxic, eco-friendly palette of pigments in her work, and her oils would start to get clumpy and pasty pretty quickly. They weren’t doing an optimal job capturing the essence of the native Missouri wildflowers that were her subjects.

So she rediscovered an old friend: watercolor, even though Columbia College no longer offers classes in the medium due to a lack of student demand.

“I’ve used it ever since I was a kid,” Thompson said. “(My paintings) work better in watercolor form.”

Over 15 months, she completed all of the watercolor pieces that went into her Bachelor of Fine Arts exhibition, “Habitat,” which ran for a week in mid-April in the Sidney Larson Gallery in Brown Hall on the Columbia College main campus.

“Habitat” is a collection of works and sketches that depict the native flora around which Thompson grew up in Columbia, Missouri. It takes on a deeper dimension when coupled with the research on pollinators that Thompson has been doing for the past few years, the effect that the dwindling bee population is having on plant and human life.

She based her show around the habitats that those pollinators sustain.

“Everyone seems to really enjoy all the work,” Thompson said about her exhibition. “They say it feels like a breath of fresh air, it’s peaceful and beautiful. I do want to create that space, because I think that’s what nature does for us. But the people who have looked at my sketchbook pages have really seen the cornerstone of my work, that have read the research on pollinators and how they’re tied to these wildflowers, and how these wildflowers are important to the ecosystem.

“I really appreciate those comments. That’s really what drives all of this.”

Thompson’s passion for watercolor helped her earn a prestigious Whitaker Foundation Scholarship for this spring, her final term before graduation. The Whitaker Foundation offers two scholarships worth $2,000 each semester to BFA students who are focusing on watercolor.

Those funds, along with the aid she received through the school’s Columbia College Scholars awards, helped her bring “Habitat” to life: from creating the pieces, through mapping out blueprints of the exhibition space, to adorning the walls with vibrant works of art.

“Watercolor has an interesting history, because it hasn’t always been respected as much as oil painting or the other arts,” Thompson said. “I really enjoyed researching their organization, finding out what they do and why they support watercolor, specifically, as a medium.”

Thompson graduated with her BFA at Southwell Complex on April 28, and she has already been accepted into the Columbia College Master of Arts in Teaching program. She hopes to get her certification to teach in art and Spanish, in which she is fluent. She has been speaking Spanish since she was 12.

“It’s kind of like a lawnmower: You have to pull a few times to get it started, but once it goes, it goes,” she said, with a laugh. “I had some really great teachers (at Hickman High School) that were native speakers and really helped me not just see it as a language, but in the cultural aspect. It’s just been a part of my life.”

Thompson put that fluency to good use during a nearly two-month trip to Peru and Ecuador last spring. She did a Study Abroad tour to Peru through Columbia College, then did volunteer work at a home for vulnerable women in Ecuador.

She also found time to indulge her artistic side, taking in the breathtaking scenery of the Andean Mountains in both countries and going to an exhibition by the Bolivian artist Jose Rodriguez Sanchez.

She filled her travel journal cover to cover.

“It’s really important to respect and learn about other people, to learn to speak their language, think the way they do,” Thompson said. “I think we make a lot of surface judgments about other people, and we live in a very polarized time. But when you actually live with someone and learn how and why they do things, it’s a lot harder to judge them and a lot easier to see the human being you’re living with.”

On May 17, more than 250 members of the Columbia College campus community and many friends from mid-Missouri gathered to celebrate the groundbreaking of a new Academic and Residence Hall on the north end of the main campus. This facility will reinforce the spirit of innovation and collaboration the college has been known for since its founding in 1851.

The 60,000-square foot building will be four stories tall. The main floor will house the School of Business, featuring a large lobby, faculty offices, innovation stations for study groups, classrooms and an event center large enough to host 150 guests.

With the 20 percent growth in enrollments the Columbia College Day campus has experienced during the past two years, and more growth projected for the future, additional space for student housing is a priority. That need will be met with the addition of the residence hall component of the building, which will exist on the top three floors with a capacity for 150 students.

“Having graduated with a business administration degree, I take great pride in knowing that our School of Business will have a new home on the first floor of the Academic and Residence Hall,” says Chair of the Board of Trustees Web Bixby ’82. “This innovative, multipurpose building will serve us well for generations to come,.”

The building will be open to students when the Fall Semester begins in August 2019. A dedication is planned for September 2019.

COMMENTARY: Dr. Scott Dalrymple – The Question of Deplorable Snowflakes

Dr. Scott Dalrymple

September 11, 2018 – Inside Higher Ed

“When I was a kid, my father was always fiddling with engines. He’d grown up on a farm and spent years working in Army motor pools, giving him an appreciation of internal combustion that I will never achieve. Engine repair involved a curious amount of reaching for oil filters, which always seemed hidden in some diabolical location. When I think of Dad in those years, I envision his arm thrust into an engine, his head turned away to provide a few more inches of reach.

“Damned college-educated engineers. Whose bright idea was it to put the oil filter there? I’d like to take it and shove it up their …” You get the idea.

My father’s mild brand of anti-intellectualism extended beyond automotive engineers. He delighted in kitchen-table tales of how some college-educated kid at work had screwed up that day, usually through a stunning lack of judgment. In his eyes, it was an either/or: either you were book smart, or you had common sense. The idea that someone might exhibit both traits simultaneously seemed unlikely, and perhaps even unfair, to him.”

Dr. Scott Dalrymple

The Missouri Department of Higher Education recently announced that Dr. Scott Dalrymple, president of Columbia College, has been appointed to serve as chair of the Presidential Advisory Committee (PAC) and Dr. Carlos Vargas, President of Southeast Missouri State University, has been selected to serve as vice chair. The PAC’s role is to advise the Coordinating Board for Higher Education (CBHE) of the views of the institutions on matters within the purview of the coordinating board.

“We are pleased to welcome Dr. Dalrymple and Dr. Vargas to the PAC leadership. The PAC is vital in helping to shape important higher education decisions to benefit all students across Missouri,” Doug Kennedy, CBHE chair said.

The chair and vice chair will serve for the 2018-2020 term, representing the PAC in communication with the coordinating board. However, all PAC members are invited to participate in the regular public meetings of the CBHE.

Per Missouri statute, the Presidential Advisory Committee consists of 32 members – the president or other chief administrative officer of each of the public four-year colleges and universities; the president of State Technical College of Missouri; the president or chancellor of each community college; and representatives of five accredited private institutions selected biennially, under the supervision of the coordinating board, by the presidents of all of the state’s privately supported institutions. The PAC is always to include at least one representative from one privately supported community college, one privately supported four-year college, and one privately supported university.

From left to right: Executive Director of Advancement Suzanne Rothwell, Interim Provost Dr. Piyusha Singh, Robert W. Plaster School of Business Dean Dr. Shanda Davis, President Dr. Scott Dalrymple, Board Member of the Robert W. Plaster Foundation Mary Posner, Executive Director of the Robert W. Plaster Foundation Dr. Dolly Plaster Clement and Chair of the Board of Trustees Web Bixby.

Columbia College announced today that it has received a significant, seven-figure gift to name the Robert W. Plaster School of Business. Beginning in Fall 2019, it will be housed on the first floor of the new Academic and Residence Hall that has been under construction since March of this year. The facility will also include state-of-the-art classrooms and an event space on the first floor, as well as three floors of residential living area for 150 students in response to continued enrollment growth on the main campus over the course of the last three years.

“On behalf of the entire Columbia College community, we are extremely grateful for the generous contribution the Plaster Foundation has made to this endeavor,” said Web Bixby, chair of the Columbia College Board of Trustees. “This gift allows our students to continue developing the skills they need to become the successful entrepreneurs and business leaders of tomorrow.”

The college’s business curriculum encourages students to build a solid foundation in business fundamentals that are crucial for success in today’s global economy. As a result, more than 28 percent of all degrees granted by the college last year were housed within the School of Business, making business degrees the most popular academic offerings at the college. From focuses on entrepreneurship to marketing to public relations and advertising, the programs available to students around the world are diverse and robust.

“My father would be very excited to see students on the Columbia College campus and around the country learning about business, entrepreneurship and America’s free enterprise system. They are preparing for the future of their dreams. It is important they understand how the free enterprise system provides them the opportunity to improve their lives and the lives of others around them along the way,” said Dr. Dolly Plaster Clement, Executive Director of the Robert W. Plaster Foundation. “The Robert W. Plaster Foundation is excited to continue its partnership with Columbia College, its faculty and students, and we can’t wait to see their accomplishments.”

The mission of the Robert W. Plaster Foundation is to promote expanded educational opportunities, pride in America and belief in the free enterprise system for the benefit of America’s youth through named capital projects.

“This gift is the largest donation the college has received in its 167-year history,” said Dr. Scott Dalrymple, president of Columbia College. “We are proud to partner with the Plaster Foundation and its philanthropy will have a positive impact on our campus community for generations to come.”

The new structure will be located just south of the R. Marvin Owens Athletic Field on Cougar Drive. Fundraising for the building continues, with the Academic and Residence Hall set to open in August 2019. For more information or to support the building project, call (573) 875-7563 or visit my.ccis.edu/newdirection.

The President's Society Class of 2018

The President’s Society Class of 2018

It’s not often that you get the chance to thank strangers for the help they’ve provided to you when you are in need. Columbia College student LaTasha Tilford was able to do just that Thursday evening in Dulany Hall, and it was one of many special moments during the President’s Society Annual Dinner.

Tilford suffered an illness that required intensive-care hospitalization, and not long after, while dropping her daughter off to college in Houston, was stranded there because of the devastating effects of Hurricane Harvey. Because of her extended absence, she had to withdraw from Columbia College.

Yet she persevered, re-enrolled and applied for scholarship aid. In April she was recognized as the recipient of the Assisting Women’s Achievement Scholarship and Barnhouse Memorial Scholarship, which allowed her to continue her studies. Her chance to thank those who made the scholarships possible came Thursday night.

She was also quick to credit her advisor, Kim Majors, who helped walk Tilford through every step of the process. “[Kim] has been a shoulder to cry on when everything seemed to be crumbling around me in my personal life,” she said. “I would make an appointment with her, sometimes going into her office, sometimes a phone appointment where she would call me, listen and say let me figure some things out. It never failed that she would direct me to a solution to continue my education.”

Tilford already has a job lined up at Hickman High School in Columbia upon graduation, and her persistence has inspired her mother, a registered nurse, to return to school herself with the goal of training future nurses upon graduation.

Stories like Tilford’s are not uncommon, and her ability to continue momentum toward a degree – she will graduate in December – is due in part to the generosity of many members of the audience who were in attendance that evening. President’s Society’s members have each contributed lifetime gifts of $10,000 or more to the college. Their philanthropy sustains the legacy of the college, its students, the community and society. A total of 20 families and organizations were inducted into the President’s Society Thursday evening, with another 13 upgrading their membership through higher levels of giving.

Columbia College President Dr. Scott Dalrymple thanked the new inductees for their support of the college – noting accomplishments such as the institution’s record-breaking fundraising year of $8.55 million in 2018; the Cougar athletic department winning the American Midwest Conference President’s Cup for the second time in as many years as CC has been eligible; and the implementation of TRUitionSM, an innovative non-traditional student-recruitment campaign that has eliminated all fees and included the price of textbooks into the cost of tuition. The program is especially beneficial for our students associated with the military, as they essentially can earn their degree at no cost to them thanks to our partnership with the U.S. Armed Forces.

“The contributions by donors such as our President’s Society members make a positive difference in the lives of Columbia College students every day, and they ensure the institution continues to offer exemplary academic offerings,” said Dr. Dalrymple.

One of the college’s newest President’s Society members, the Robert W. Plaster Foundation, was inducted a day after the announcement of its transformational, seven-figure gift to name the Robert W. Plaster School of Business, which will be located on the ground floor of New Hall.

The evening was also highlighted by a trio of outstanding vocal performances from students of the School of Humanities, Arts, and Social Sciences. Senior Kaitlyn Landers sang “Smanie implacabili” from Mozart’s Così fan tutte; sophomore Preston Johnson sang “Marry Me a Little” from Stephen Sondheim’s musical Company; and senior Madi Mertz ended the segment with a captivating performance of “Je veux vivre” from Gounod’s Romeo and Juliet.

For information on how to contribute to or start a scholarship, please contact the Columbia College Office of Development at (573) 875-7563, or visit https://my.ccis.edu/givenow.

Students battle for $9,000 prize pool at Entrepreneur Pitch Competition

Jones receiving check from Drs. Dalrymple and Singh

Whitney Jones, center, receives the first-place check from Columbia College President Dr. Scott Dalrymple and Interim Provost Dr. Piyusha Singh.

Mark Cuban wasn’t there to propose an equity stake in their companies, but the bright lights of Bixby Lecture Hall on the Columbia College main campus served as a quasi-Shark Tank environment on Friday, Oct. 12, for the college’s annual Student Entrepreneurship Showcase Pitch Competition. Hosted by the Steven and Barbara Fishman Center for Entrepreneurship, the competition allows five students from various Columbia College locations the chance to win from a $9,000 prize pool.

This year, the five students hailed from St. Louis, Orlando, and the college’s Evening Campus, and featured a mix of students with previous pitch experience and new entrepreneurs.

Whitney Jones, who finished third in the competition two years ago, won the $5,000 first-place prize this year for pitching her two-year-old business, Liv & Kiss, a wholesale plus-sized women’s apparel line that was founded with the simplest of business notions.

“I was tired of going into stores, struggling to find things to wear. Being plus-sized, it’s always been hard,” Jones said.

Students were assisted by their business instructors at Columbia College, director of Fishman Center for Entrepreneurship Becky Bocklage, as well as by outside coaches that provided guidance leading up to the competition. Sara Cochran, Entrepreneurial Programs Manager for the University of Missouri System and an adjunct faculty member at MU’s Trulaske College of Business, served as Jones’ coach this year. Because they live in different cities, the pair took advantage of Skype and email to stay in touch.

“We talked through some of the challenges and questions she had as she worked through the different kind of elements of her business model and her pitch,” Cochran says. “I had seen part of her pitch last year, and so I knew the general sort of customer problem she’s trying to solve, but I didn’t have a lot of knowledge of how she was doing it.”

The $3,000 second-place prize went to another St. Louis student, Lamar Lockett. His startup is L-tre, a custom t-shirt design and production company that focuses on special life events such as birthdays, family and high-school reunions and graduations. It was Lockett’s first pitch experience.

“It was a roller-coaster ride, but with the practice and coaching we got, it really changed what I thought it would look like,” he said. “Their coaching helped me see how some things I wanted to convey wouldn’t go over well, and that helped me in the competition. So I edited a few things, but I was excited about it the whole way through.”

Third place, and $1,000, went to Nigisti HiSmith of the Orlando location. She is the founder of Pearls of Grace, a 501(c)(4) social-awareness non-profit focused on assisting children in adverse situations.

Erika Thomas, director of the St. Louis location, isn’t surprised at the growth of entrepreneurship among Columbia College students.

“I read an interesting statistic: It said roughly a third of millennials will try entrepreneurship in some capacity, and of that third, half of them will be successful,” says Thomas. “I have a school that’s pretty much full of millennials. We’re noticing that our entrepreneurship course that we offer – even though it’s not a core course to graduate – I have to offer it because people ask for it.”

Administrators also take advantage of the calendar: The St. Louis location’s entrepreneurship class is often offered in the spring, right before the deadline to enter the pitch competition. “Our teachers get students excited about entrepreneurship, and they enter right away,” she says.

Jones, who won the Columbia College-St. Louis pitch competition in 2016, impressed the judges with her efforts in continuing to secure deals with specific boutiques to carry her garments. She’s also close to finalizing a deal with a major retailer’s online portal.

“I see the growth, and I think she’s right on the cusp of that,” says Cochran, her coach. “She just got a big client, which has just thrown her over the edge, and I think she’s right on the tipping point of going pretty big.”

For her part, while the win was satisfying for Jones, it’s not the end goal.

“It shows me that what I’m doing is worth it, but so does the fact that I have clients who say, ‘oh my God, thank you, I love this garment, it made me feel beautiful.’ Because at the end of the day, I want all my customers to feel beautiful,” Jones says. “It helps them accomplish all of their dreams. For me, yeah, profit is good, but that’s not it; it’s really about the customer. It’s not about the money; knowing that I helped somebody feel better about themselves to tackle what’s on their list is what it’s really about.”

Sports & Event Marketing class raises money for Coyote Hill with kickball

Kickin' It For the KidsIf you walked onto R. Marvin Owens Field on Oct. 28, you would have heard loud music, noticed people playing yard games like corn hole and hillbilly golf and felt the energy of a fun atmosphere surrounding #KickinItForTheKids. The event was a 12-team kickball tournament hosted by Columbia College’s Sports and Event Marketing class. Proceeds of the event benefitted Coyote Hill Christian Children’s Home.

The goal was to raise $1,500 for Coyote Hill, a local non-profit organization that provides a safe home for abused and neglected children. From planning the event to executing it, one thing was clear: This was a rewarding and learning experience for all, and one the students would never forget.

Instructor Brandi Herrman, who has taught the Sports and Event Marketing class for four years, originally had no intentions of the class putting on an event. She thought she would have the class do a different project, yet one class period changed the plan.

“I did an in-class activity and the students started to think about putting on an event and what it took to put on an event.” said Herrman. “Basically, they did a SWOT [strengths, weaknesses, opportunities, threats] analysis for putting on a sporting event as a class discussion. As we were talking about it, they said, ‘That was a lot of fun; we wish we were doing an event.’”

There was no way Herrman could say no. Planning immediately started, and they were given a timeline of six weeks to get everything together. Herrman switched up her syllabus for the semester, and it was full steam ahead.

The class began by breaking into three groups: promotions, sponsorships, and game day operations. Even though they had separate assignments, it was clear to all that they would need to work together.

Ward Mershon, a junior sports management major who led game-day operations, said working together was a key component. “I think we all have learned how to work together by communicating through groups, GroupMe, and different communication apps.”

The class chose Coyote Hill as a beneficiary because one of the students in the class was familiar with the organization. Most of the class had no idea what Coyote Hill did, and once they learned, they were impressed by its mission, especially after touring the facility.

“We had heard about it, but we didn’t really know about it, and it was good to go see what they were actually doing there. We met with some of the kids, we saw all the houses, and we went inside to see the kids which was really cool,” said Michael Bowen, a senior marketing and management major. “It was a really good opportunity for us to kind of see it with our own eyes and get an idea of what we were actually helping out with.”

Bowen went on to say about Coyote Hill, “They’re just a great organization, they do a lot of good for those kids, and you can see it on those kids’ faces. They have a good time while they’re there, they really do make the best out of it, out of a situation that’s obviously not the best.”

For many of the students, this event was a chance to get real-world experience.

“Putting on the event, it’s just kind of interesting to see all the little things you don’t think about when you go to an actual sporting event, like a Columbia College game,” Mershon said. “You don’t really know how much work goes into it until you put on an event like this.”

Marina Heard, a senior human resources major with a minor in business, felt the same way.

“I’ve learned how to work with different types of people, I’ve learned what actually goes into a sporting event. I’ve always gone to sporting events, but I’ve never gotten to see the behind-the-scenes of everything, so that was kind of fun,” she said. “I think we all took away how much effort it takes.”

The hardest part of putting on the event? Getting teams to commit and come out. The class had to weigh the benefits to the $10 cost of participation.

“It’s just getting people here. Getting people to spend money on the raffles and concessions, and keeping people involved once they were here was the most difficult,” said Molly Carter, a senior sports marketing major. “But I think we did a really good job of doing so.”

As for the actual tournament, the Columbia College Men’s Basketball team defeated the Foot Fetishes in the championship, 10-9.

The class felt their hard work was well worth it, and the students were proud they were able to raise $2,000 for Coyote Hill.

The members of the Sports and Event Marketing class thank all of the tournament sponsors, including: Spires Enterprises Inc., Columbia Eye Consultants, Chick-fil-A, Servpro, Diggit Graphics, and Miller, Bales & Company and others. Thanks to everyone who came out to support #KickinItForTheKids.

Columbia College-Kansas City awards location scholarship to Brooke Madrid

Columbia College-Kansas City director Cindy Miller (left) and Academic Advisor Dori Cantrell (far right) present the Kansas City location’s 2019 scholarship to Brooke Madrid.

Columbia College Regional Director, Region 2 and Director of the Kansas City location Cindy Miller recently announced that student Brooke Madrid (Raytown, Missouri) has been awarded the location’s scholarship for the 2019 academic year. Madrid is a junior working toward a degree in business. The $1,000 scholarship is presented annually to a current Columbia College-Kansas City student.

“Brooke is a very dedicated, hard-working student and is driven to succeed,” Miller said. “We are very proud of her and pleased to present this scholarship to her. The award would not be possible without the generosity of our faculty, staff, alumni and friends who have supported the scholarship for several years.”

To be eligible for the scholarship, a student must be currently enrolled in and pursing a degree at Columbia College, have a minimum cumulative GPA of 3.0 and have successfully completed four classes at the Kansas City location. Applicants are also required to submit a 400-500 word essay noting evidence of financial need and description of career goals, leadership and/or community-service achievements.

“To not graduate is not an option for me because my kids need to see me finish this … I will be the first of my grandmother’s grandchildren to get a degree,” Madrid said in her application. “I never thought college would be a possibility for me. I was wrong … I hope to use my knowledge to make the world a better place.”

The Fishman Center for Entrepreneurship’s annual Student Entrepreneur Showcase pitch competition has continually had strong representation from the St. Louis location. From Erika Thomas’ perspective, there’s one man who deserves – but will never seek – the credit.

“Alan Lester was pushing this ball,” says Thomas, director of Columbia College-St. Louis. “He even got me motivated, so a lot of props go to him. What really strikes me about Alan is his passion and his humility. All of this attention is too much for him right now.”

Lester has a lifetime of organizational experience, from serving as an executive for a bank holding company, to developing business contacts and strategic plans, to consulting with the FDIC and state banking departments involving distressed banks.

“I’ve been blessed and have been involved in a lot of different areas of finance,” he says.

For student Lamar Lockett, Lester’s move into the classroom is a perfect fit.

“With some teachers, you have to want to learn from them,” says Lockett. “Alan’s an actual good teacher. He can explain things even to someone that doesn’t have an initial interest, and get you interested. He just has that type of personality that helps you and motivates you to learn more.”

Lester constantly pushes his finance students to enter the pitch competition, and was instrumental in creating a local competition in St. Louis to serve as a qualifier for the Fishman competition in Columbia. The results bear out that drive: This year, three of the five presenters were from the Gateway City, and Lockett was beat out for the top prize by a fellow St. Louisian, Whitney Jones.

“And I’ve enjoyed every minute of it,” Lester says. While his students’ feats are impressive, for Lester, there’s just one acceptable outcome for what he considers his Super Bowl. Lockett’s smile goes wide at the premise.

“He’s greedy,” Lockett laughs. “He wanted all of us to win.”

*Editor’s Note: CC Biz Buzz is a new monthly column series that will feature insightful commentary from a member of the Columbia College Robert W. Plaster School of Business faculty.

“This semester I’m teaching crisis management, one of my favorite courses. We review case studies from the past, dig into the situation, the history of it, the root causes, and, of course, the way businesses decide to handle said crises. We study all the big ones, including the Tylenol tampering case of 1982 and the myriad of BP disasters including the Deepwater Horizon explosion of 2010. We study cases worldwide.

In addition, each semester, I require that my students look no further than current events to find additional crises either brewing, in full boil or cooling down after boiling over.”

A Life of Education and Service: Smalley helped students succeed for 40 years

Lavelle Smalley

By Ann Muder

Lavelle Smalley has always had a strong work ethic. The son of a farmer, he grew up in Arab, Alabama, where his family worked hard to make ends meet. It was that drive to succeed that led him to become one of the first faculty members at Columbia College – Redstone Arsenal and one of the first instructors for the Online program.

In 2018, Smalley stepped down from his teaching career after more than 40 years of dedication to teaching his students. In his time at Columbia College, he worked full-time as a civilian for the Army while teaching courses two nights per week. He also served as a commissioned officer and retired from the Army Reserve as a major after 20 years of service. From 1976 to 2018, he taught courses every single semester, serving as an inspiration for his students with his success in the business and education fields.

Smalley says his interest in education started when he was young. He excelled in his classes and was voted “most studious” boy in his high school graduating class. “Education was always important to me,” he says. “I grew up in a very poor background and probably wouldn’t have gone to college if it wasn’t for the Army.”

The military community played a big part in Smalley’s education and career. He started working for the Army in logistics as a civilian after graduating high school. As a logistician, he helped “make things happen” by receiving equipment from government contractors, ordering spare parts, delivering items to deployed soldiers and training soldiers on how to use equipment. Smalley was soon promoted and began management training programs through the Army. He led a team of logisticians dedicated to the development, deployment and training of a major Army missile system. To accomplish their mission, the team visited contactor plants, military bases and the Pentagon and traveled to countries including Japan, South Korea, Germany and Belgium.

Seeing his potential in management, the Army paid for him to pursue a college education. After spending long nights studying for his degrees after working during the day, he earned two degrees –a bachelor’s degree in accounting from the University of Montevallo, Alabama, and an MBA from the Jacksonville State University in Jacksonville, Alabama – and completed doctorate work at Nova Southeastern University in Fort Lauderdale, Florida.

Smalley had never expected to become a college instructor, but that changed in 1976, right after Columbia College – Redstone Arsenal opened. Mariam Barclay, the location’s site director, asked if he would teach a course in marketing. He jumped at the chance to help students succeed and to give back to the military community that had helped him pursue his education and further his career. For the next 34 years, Smalley taught two evening business classes each week at Columbia College – Redstone Arsenal while still working full-time for the Army.

As an adjunct professor, Smalley taught students, mainly with military backgrounds, who were dedicated to advancing their careers through education. He says the most rewarding part was celebrating their successes along with them as they achieved their goals. “I attended graduation each year and watched them receive their diplomas. It was always a special occasion.”

Smalley retired from his Army logistics position as a senior manager in 1999, but he continued to teach at Columbia College. In 2002, he assisted Professor Arlin Epperson with initiating the Online program at Columbia College and became one of the college’s first online instructors. He taught courses both at Columbia College – Redstone Arsenal and online for the next eight years. When he left Columbia College – Redstone Arsenal, he continued to teach online courses until 2018.

While Smalley left his teaching career last year, he continues to stay busy. He and his son, Michael, co-own a real estate company where they manage rental properties. “I’m always up to something,” he says. “I’ve always liked to work and keep a full schedule.”

As he looks back on the past 40 years, Smalley says he’ll miss the support and friendship he’s had at Columbia College. “I’ve enjoyed working with the students and watching them learn and succeed,” he says. “I’m also very thankful to those have supported me and served as my mentors over the years.”

Columbia College records third best fundraising year in school’s 168-year history

New Hall, the college’s multi-purpose facility that will serve as the new home of the Robert W. Plaster School of Business and house 150 students, will open this fall.

Columbia College President Scott Dalrymple recently announced that the college has recorded its third-best fundraising year in school history, raising $3.13 million during the 2019 fiscal year (July 1, 2018-June 30, 2019.) This total comes on the heels of a record-breaking FY18 that saw the college raise $8.55 million. The $11.68 million raised since July 2017 is the highest total in the history of the college over the course of two consecutive fiscal years.

“We are very fortunate to have many generous friends of the college, alumni, faculty and staff who have great affinity for this institution, and they showcase that commitment through giving,” says Dalrymple. “Being good stewards of these gifts is our focus, and they will help us continue our mission of changing lives through quality education.”

Gifts are directed towards student support, scholarships and also to the college’s area of greatest need via the Columbia College Fund. Contributions also benefited New Hall, the college’s multi-purpose facility that will serve as the new home of the Robert W. Plaster School of Business and house 150 students. The building is currently under construction with completion set for August. The college will host the dedication of New Hall on September 25 at 4 p.m. Visit my.ccis.edu/newdirection or call (573) 875-7563 to learn how you can support this exciting endeavor with a named space or commemorative brick.

Earlier this spring, $233,000 in scholarships were awarded to 146 students at the college’s 11th annual Honors and Awards ceremony. Tyana Shelby (right) was one of the students presented with a scholarship by Dr. Scott Dalrymple at the event. She received the Price-Lamke-Jennings-Bassett Scholarship.

“Our philanthropic partners continue to step up and support our efforts to provide a world-class educational experience for our students,” said Suzanne Rothwell, the college’s vice president of Advancement. “We are pleased with the momentum we are experiencing from a fundraising standpoint, and appreciate the generosity of our donors.”

The college recorded 8,132 gifts in 2019, up from 7,316 in 2018 (an 11 percent increase) and also had 675 new donors this year vs. 361 new donors last year (an 87 percent increase). One of the drivers for the increase in new donors was the college’s first-ever Giving Day that took place in April. The 24-hour initiative was focused on inviting members of the Columbia College community to make a single gift with a goal of 500 participants. More than 550 donors made gifts as part of that campaign, raising more than $29,400.

*Editor’s Note: CC Biz Buzz is a new monthly column series that will feature insightful commentary from a member of the Columbia College Robert W. Plaster School of Business faculty.

Nearly a century ago, T.S. Eliot started his famous poem with “April is the cruellest (Eliot’s spelling) month…” I don’t think he was referring to filing taxes, but it does seem apt. When the new federal income tax laws took effect in 2018, most of us expected to pay less tax. And indeed, most of us had lower tax bills, but it did not show up in the form of a fat refund at the end of the year. Instead, the IRS, anticipating the lower tax rates, instructed employers to withhold less money from each of our paychecks. Thus, our tax cut was meted out to wage earners a little bit each month, in the form of larger paychecks. (Did you notice?)

The first four-year BSN Class at Columbia College

The Class of 2019 Bachelor of Science in Nursing cohort graduated in April. Pictured from left to right, front row: Brandi Peasel, Madelyn Grossman-Hegenbart, Whitney Fecht, Kerigan Wessing and Dr. Tina Dalrymple, director of the Nursing program and faculty chair; Back row: Kayla Fozzard, Bryce Hopkins, Lindsay McEver, Alecia Anderson and Deanne Emde.

By Kevin Fletcher

The genesis of the Nursing program at Columbia College — which is celebrating its 30th anniversary later this year — came from the innate nature of nurses themselves. “Nurses tend to have a caring personality, as everyone knows,” says Dr. Tina Dalrymple, director of the Nursing program and faculty chair. “But they also tend to be highly driven professionals who like to get things done.”

In the 1980s, Sharon Taylor was working for Columbia Public Schools (CPS) as the director of the Columbia Area Career Center’s practical nursing program. At the time, while schools like the University of Missouri educated students with no professional nursing knowledge to earn their Bachelor of Science and become a Registered Nurse (RN), there were limited educational opportunities for Licensed Practical Nurses (LPN) in mid-Missouri to further their nursing education.

“There wasn’t the opportunity for them to become RNs,” says Taylor, who approached Columbia College officials, including then-President Dr. Donald Ruthenberg, about forming a cooperative agreement between CPS and Columbia College to offer an Associate in Science in Nursing (ASN) degree.

It would be a laborious process to get the program up and running. No classes could be taught until approval was granted by the Missouri Board of Nursing, and that was a daunting task. “I was told by several people that I would never get the program approved by the state board,” Taylor says.

Yet Taylor persisted, prepared — including working with the dean of the Mizzou School of Nursing to ensure Columbia College’s program wasn’t overstepping bounds — and then on a cold day late in 1988, drove down to Jefferson City to make her case. Before a panel of members, Taylor was allotted 60 minutes to make her presentation. Within 15 minutes, the board approved the program. “I addressed everything,” she says. “I had done my homework.”

Along with fellow charter faculty members Dr. Faye Fairchild, Dr. Joyce Gentry and other colleagues, Taylor earned national accreditation for Columbia College’s curriculum in 1995 from the National League for Nursing. “You can’t really talk about the nursing program without Sharon Taylor,” Fairchild says. “This program would not have launched without her.”

Ruthenberg and his successor, Dr. Gerald Brouder, were both staunch supporters of the nursing program. In Brouder’s case, it was an easy fit: Before serving as the 16th president of Columbia College, Brouder was the first male teacher at the University of Missouri School of Nursing, and also served as that school’s interim dean before eventually moving his office across town.

“Dr. Brouder had been my adviser in graduate school at Mizzou, so I already had a relationship with him,” Taylor says. That relationship continues to this day, as several Columbia College graduates have earned master’s and doctoral nursing degrees from Mizzou.

In 2003, two years after Taylor’s retirement from CPS, Columbia College assumed full ownership of and responsibility for the Nursing program. With Brouder nearly halfway through his 18-year tenure, the program had the administration’s full support.

That support has continued unabated under Dr. Scott Dalrymple’s leadership. As he likes to remind the crowd at each semester’s Nurses’ Pinning Ceremony, he loves nurses so much that he married one. In addition to serving as the college’s first lady, Dr. Tina Dalrymple developed the college’s Health Sciences programs, and now oversees both Nursing and Health Sciences.

In 2005, Columbia College began offering an ASN degree at its Lake of the Ozarks location, still the only other location besides the main campus for nurses to receive in-seat education. Students there work very closely with Lake Regional Health Systems (LRHS), the major healthcare provider in the area. Sara Riley serves as ASN Coordinator at the Lake location.

LRHS offers an externship program that accepts several nursing students each year. Lake ASN students work nights and weekends performing various tasks for the hospital, which provides valuable real-world experience. “It’s a recruitment tool for the hospital to get these nurses oriented to the hospital before they graduate, plus it’s an opportunity for the student to ask, ‘Do I like this? Is this where I’d like to work?’ Most of them stay at LRHS, so it’s a win-win for everyone,” Gentry says.

With its ASN program, the college has done well to educate the next generation of nurses, yet for years, the faculty yearned for a BSN program to solidify Columbia College as a premier nursing educational institution. In 2014, the college made the first step toward that goal by offering an “RN-to-BSN” program. Offered exclusively online, the degree program is for registered nurses who already have their ASN but wish to further their education. Some healthcare systems require their nurses to have their BSN; many offer career advancement to nurses with that distinction.

Once the online program was up and running, an in-seat BSN program was the natural next step. “The nursing faculty have wanted for many years for us to have a BSN in-seat program,” says Kay Dingler, who coordinated the ASN program in Columbia until her retirement this spring. “The RN-to-BSN program has worked well for our ASN graduates because they all wanted to come back and graduate again from Columbia College. But the in-seat BSN is a foundational program for us.”

Lindsay McEver, who has other nurses in her family, concurs. “The reputation of the ASN program provided quite a bit of trust in the program’s success and ability for the professors to prepare us for our nursing exams,” she says. McEver had enrolled at Columbia College solely to take pre-requisites en route to earning a BSN elsewhere, but once the college was approved to offer the degree in the fall of 2016, she stayed thanks to her positive experience during the evening classes she took while working. McEver graduated as president of the inaugural BSN class this spring, and has taken a position at University of Missouri Hospital in the neuroscience ICU.

Another BSN graduate, Kerigan Wessing, was one of four across the entire college recognized with a Presidential Award during commencement ceremonies this spring. She also earned her degree with distinction, and was voted by her peers to receive the Florence Nightingale Award for epitomizing the art and science of nursing.

Further evidence of the growth of the program comes with national recognition of the college’s students; to that end, the college has started the process to form its own chapter of Sigma Tau Theta, an international nursing honor society for BSN graduates. Until the college completes a three-year process to earn that chapter designation, the faculty is inducting its BSN graduates into a temporary Ivy Chain Nursing Honor Society; the group inducted its first class in mid-April prior to commencement ceremonies. Dr. Tina Dalrymple serves as the organization’s president, and several department faculty hold board roles.

In the same vein, this is also the first year that Columbia College nursing students were eligible for induction into Alpha Delta Nu, a national nursing honor society for ASN graduates. “Being a member of a nursing honor society is very prestigious. When you have that on your resumé and you apply for jobs, people know what that means,” Gentry says.

The college continues to innovate as it grows, and the opening of the Gerald T. and Bonnie M. Brouder Science Center in 2013 is a significant example. The new facility has helped facilitate the use of technology such as state-of-the-art advanced patient simulators, peripherals and advanced software to aid in students’ clinical skills development.

The program currently boasts five simulators for its students to utilize: a pair of SimMan 3G and a MegaCode Kelly high-fidelity simulators in Brouder; SimJunior, which is an interactive pediatric simulator; and Victoria, a laborand-delivery simulator, in the instructional center at Federal Hall in downtown Columbia.

President Dalrymple was so impressed with SimMan that he asked to be the hidden voice behind the male “patient” during one classroom simulation. Using a microphone in an adjacent room, he told students he wasn’t feeling well. When they asked SimMan why, he cycled through a number of unlikely maladies before ultimately claiming that he was pregnant. “It took them awhile to decide whether to send the patient to the Psych Ward, or to laugh,” Dalrymple says. They laughed, and he confessed to the ruse.

Some of that technology has been made possible through a pair of $150,000 grants awarded to the college in 2017 and 2018 by the Missouri State Board’s Nursing Education Incentive Program. In addition to the technology, the grants have helped fund faculty scholarships to further their education as well as hire full-time faculty and cover their salary for a year.

Only five awards are given statewide per year, and the college receiving awards in back-to-back years is a testament to the program. Gentry credits Laura O’Neil, assistant director of Institutional Grants & Foundation Relations, and Dr. Tina Dalrymple for their tireless efforts to secure vital funding. “Their work on these kinds of grant proposals is very, very helpful, very significant, and so beneficial to our ASN and BSN programs,” she says.

Columbia College has been blessed with a number of excellent instructors and professors over the years, and one announced her retirement this spring. Dingler, who served the college for 14 years and taught countless nurses, is transitioning into a part-time position, which will allow her to teach some lab and clinical sessions, and also spend quality time directly teaching students.

“The end is better than the beginning. I couldn’t have been in a better place,” she says. “I love Columbia College; all the faculty, all the staff, all the students are wonderful. I was just talking with one of my former colleagues from Boone [Hospital Center]. She teaches at another college, and she said, ‘I would retire, but I love my students.’ And I told her that I understand that.”

With Dingler’s retirement, Paula Garfias has assumed coordination of the ASN program in Columbia. Dr. Heidi Monroe serves as BSN Coordinator. Other full-time faculty members include Corrine Floyd, Janet Chance-Hetzler, and Sara Riley. Dr. Heidi Holtz, who has worked part-time as a clinical instructor since October, has joined the nursing faculty on a full-time basis as an assistant professor.

“We have a great team and the future is so bright,” says Dr. Tina Dalrymple. “The demand for our nurses is strong. Columbia College is truly changing lives — not only those of our students, but of the thousands of patients they will serve during their careers.”
